Hi
I attended the recent open afternoon for P5. I did not receive a questionnaire at the end of the session, so I would like to give you my feedback. I understand that you want to move away from the format of the curriculum evening, but having to take an afternoon of work was really inconvenient, even first thing in the morning would have been better as it would only require a few hours off. Fortunately I only have one child in the school. I also feel that it is unfair for those children who's parents are uanble to attend due to work or other commitments. I am still unsure as to what was meant to be acheived? It all seemed quite disorganised and without focus. I didn't even get to speak to the teacher? Not sure this format works.
We have passed your comments onto the school. Mrs McLaren has kindly responded : -
The purpose of Open Afternoons, widely accepted as sound good practice throughout education, is to allow parents to see their children in their classroom environment and to be shown and told, by the children, what they are doing. This is one of many activities children undertake to build in them the Four Capacities of A Curriculum for Excellence (Confident Individuals, Successful Learners, Effective Contributors, Responsible Citizens). The purpose is not for parents to speak with class teachers; Parent Consultations provide this opportunity.
We take all views into account, whether positive or negative. The feedback we have so far is very positive indeed. Children and teachers will be asked to evaluate their experience. This will be used to inform and improve any future plans.
We can look in future at having morning slots instead of afternoons if feedback indicates that this would be preferable.
There may be further opportunities over the year to visit the classroom for enterprising 'Display of Knowledge' events and other activities where the children will present specifically about what they have learned in a particular area of the curriculum.
The evening format was poorly attended and feedback from parents indicated that it was no longer suitable. Staff were giving up many evenings to attend, voluntarily.
regards,
Jan
